What on Earth is May Term?
May 6th, 2011
Some of you may be wondering, what on Earth is May Term? Is it the same as Summer Session 1? Doesn’t that give you a late start to summer? As I walked into Dr. Posler’s office, Assistant Provost of Undergraduate Studies, I had some of the same questions, so it was a good thing I had a chance to ask him about it. Here’s my recently found insight on USI’s newly added May Term:
First of all, it begins May 11th and ends June 3rd. Classes are only four weeks long (shorter than our other two summer sessions), and last for two hours and twenty minutes a day. Completing core classes is a cinch if you enroll in May Term. The reason being, there are different kinds of core classes offered, and a lot more of them at that. The classes are smaller and have a more intensive structure which helps to benefit not only the student but also the professor. People who attend summer classes come away with a different experience. They tend to like going to their summer classes because it gives them a chance to be heard by professors on another level. So what’s my point?
Smaller classes + longer class time = deeper discussion and more understanding of the subject
With May Term, you’re going to get your classes done, and you’re going to get them done early. From there, you’ve got the rest of the summer to yourself. Four short, enjoyable weeks, and you can walk away feeling accomplished. I don’t know about you, but to me that’s pure bliss.
